"Gary, if the pain gets unbearable, just push the button." The nurse then left.
He grimaced at the morphine drip.
"Dad, you don't have to endure pain," his son Vince commented. Gary's body had been ravaged by an incurable, particularly-nasty and fast-spreading cancer. "Taking painkillers makes sense."
"They knock me out, and I don't want to sleep through my remaining time."
Later a sound woke him. A different nurse stood nearby. She seemed to glow.
"You're a good man," she said, taking his hand.
Warmth moved throughout his body. His pain vanished.
The next day, testing showed he was cancer-free.
