"She needs a transplant," the doctors said after Maddie's kidneys shut down, but the organ registry had no matches. None could be found except for me, and they refused to take mine.
My precious baby is nine and deteriorating rapidly. I was fifty-two when I had her and her presence changed everything. Her father abandoned us, but she's brought such joy into my life.
"Maddie, I love you so much," I wrote on Thanksgiving day after talking with my sister. My plans horrified her. She'll arrive soon to try and dissuade me.
