All in a Days Work

The large tents filled the hospital's parking lot; Don walked up to his reporting station and watched in silence as they removed the dead bodies to make room for the living.

"Welcome back," a familiar voice said. "Helluva time to come back."

Without looking over his shoulder, Don said, "It felt right. How much are we overcapacity?"

"As of the last count, we are ninety-eight overcapacity," the familiar voice said. "but always changing."

Don stared at the war zone in front of him, the sick and dying, the hopeless battle for life, and said, "All right, let's get to work."
