Mark knocked Willie down, grabbing the younger boy's bucket of treats.

"Give 'em back!" Willie yelled. " They're mine from trick-or-treating."

The thief fled into the fog.

Something landed near Mark later as he sat under a tree. He looked up, squinted, and made out a man's body topped by a bat's head and pointed ears. The person had wings, over-long arms, and wicked-looking claws.

"I've seen better costumes," he sneered. "But how'd you make your eyes and chest glow?"

Flames flickered in Camazotz's eyes. The bat god grinned, exposing blood and chunks of flesh on his fangs. Then he pounced.
