To Dance with the Dead
Part Three
By: Terry D. Scheerer
Author's Note:
I would like to thank all of the readers for such a great response to my
story, "To Dance with the Dead" (although there was at least one reader
who didn't care for it). This was originally written over 25 years ago
and was one of the first full length stories I ever attempted to write.
There has been quite a lot of conversation--in the Forum--about this
story being a 'first person' narrative. I chose this style for the story
because I wanted to tell it from the main character's point of view, so
you (the reader) would be able to experience all of his feelings and
thoughts, directly, rather than being told what they might have been by a
second party. The idea of writing a story in a narrative form I
'borrowed' from the great horror writer of the 1930s, H.P. Lovecraft and
if you enjoyed my story, you should read Lovecraft's work. He was
another writer (like Poe, for instance), whose work was basically unknown
while he was alive and only became popular some time after his death.
Lovecraft's books have now been translated into many foreign languages
and have been reprinted hundreds of times and original copies of his work
are extremely rare and highly sought after.
"To Dance with the Dead" is based on an actual incident that happened in
my life and all of the descriptions regarding the mausoleum in this story
are factual. I actually spent many hours wandering around in that huge
necropolis after my grandmother was entombed there, many years ago and
the idea for the story was born within the unusual underground crypt
described in Part Three.
Since this story is some 10,000 words long, it has never been published
before, as very few magazines will accept stories of this length, so it
has seen the light of day for the first time here in the pages of "World
of Myth". And, as I just happen to have another 10-12,000 word story
gathering dust in my collection of 'probably unpublishable stories due to
their absurd length' category, perhaps I will post it here, some time
soon, for your (hopeful) enjoyment.
So, thank you again for your support and I hope you enjoy the final
chapter of, "To Dance with the Dead".
