“Oh my god, I’ve been shot,” he screamed. “How can I compete in this condition?” He rambled a bit more, until I slapped him with my backhand.

“Wallace! Wallace!”

He finally looked at me.

“Wallace, who in the Sam hill is this kid?”

Wallace gathered his composure before he spoke. “His name is Phillip Wilson. Him and his father are horse thieves. Well, he is. I killed his father last week in a shootout. This guy is more wanted by the law than that Ortega fella.”

“He has a bounty?” I calmly asked.

“Eight hundred dolla--.”

I interrupted Wallace as I jumped up, pulled my pistol and fired one round. It hit Wilson dead center in the head. His lifeless body collapsed to the ground and a stream of blood flowed from the wound. I walked over to the boy and kicked each gun away from his hands. I looked over toward Wallace who peaked out from behind the tattered wooden barrel. “He’s dead,” I said.

Wallace pulled himself up to his feet, and slowly made his way over to where I stood next to the corpse. He looked down at the boy and glanced back up toward me. “Nice shot,” he said.

“Just add that eight hundred to the money you already owe me,” I said, as I made my way back to the bank.

“Eight hundred if he was brought in alive, two hundred for dead,” he corrected. I turned and looked at the wounded man. I still had my colt firmly in my hand, and at that point I was ready to use it. “All right,” he continued quickly, “for you, because you saved my life, I’ll double it.”

“Deal,” I said softly and then holstered my pistol. “We need to get you and the Sheriff to a Doctor.” I went back over to where the Sheriff lay; he was covered in blood as it poured from his gut. “C’mon, ole man, let’s get you some help.”

To be continued…
