Chapter One - Part One

“Uh, this fella…uh, brought in Dirty Paco Ortega…and, uh….I need…”

“And you need to pay this good man,” Mayor Wallace said. He turned his attention toward me. “This town owes you a bit of gratitude.”

“Thank you, Mayor, but I’m just doing my job.”

“Your job?”

“Yes sir,” I said. I pulled my permit from my pocket and handed it to Wallace. Mayor Wallace glanced down at the paper. “So, you’re a bounty hunter? You know, Henry here, he was just talking about his retirement next month,” Wallace said. He looked up at me with a grin so evil the devil himself would have been envious of it.

The Mayor, who stood right in front of me, stared directly into my eyes. I then knew at that moment why Sheriff Henry didn’t want to have any contact with Wallace. It wasn’t because of any authoritative power he had; it was because the man was pure evil.

“I could use a person with your…let’s say, expertise,” Wallace said.

“No thanks, Mister Mayor,” I said. “I would just like to get my reward and be on my way.”

His face turned sour, but he never took his eyes off me. I saw that look in a person’s eyes before. It was a look of deep contemplation—trying to figure whether or not they’d dare to try and pull down on someone. I felt my hand slide over to my colt revolver, which rested on my right hip. We both stood there in the office for some time, and neither of us said a single word.

Eventually, it was the Sheriff who intervened. “I reckon we get this boy his money, because we don’t want no trouble here,” he said.

The Mayor glared over at Sheriff Henry for a moment and then chuckled. “I reckon so, Sheriff. I reckon so,” he said.

The sheriff had a look of relief. “Good. I don’t want any unnecessary killing in ma town.”

“Indeed Henry, especially since it would probably be you doing the dying,” Wallace grumbled back to the Sheriff.
