When I turned around to meet with the other men, one of them drove the butt of his rifle into the bridge of my nose. My eyes welled with tears and I felt hot blood flow from both my nostrils. I lost my balance and fell backward into the driver’s seat. The man then pointed his weapon at me and was about to fire. I squeezed my eyes closed and waited for the end. A loud shot rang out and I tensed for the coming pain, but there was nothing. My eyes fluttered open just in time to see that the man standing in front of me was now missing half his skull and fell dead. Then the sound of more rounds being fired filled the air.
Before the other men knew what had happened they too were struck down by snipers from the outside. I slowly stood up and looked out the broken windshield and saw a group of people walk out from the forest, each carrying a rifle. The leader said they "Came in peace." They made their way to the bus as I went over by Michael, checking on him. The bleeding seemed to have gotten worse. I had Rose change out the blood soaked towel with a fresh one and told Renee to continue applying pressure to his wound. I met the men as they boarded the bus. The first man introduced himself as Vince and explained that those other people were land pirates, who attacked camps or smaller groups for supplies. Vince and his men were out hunting when they heard gun shots. I introduced myself and the girls as well as Michael; I asked if he knew where we would find help for my son. Vince said they had someone who could help Mike back on his farm, which was only five or six miles from where we were. He welcomed the four of us to accompany them back to their land.
