Queen of the Westerlands
Part VI

Calibex frowned as he waited for the vision to form into a clear image. Something was wrong--the image should have become clear almost immediately. He passed his hands over the bowl once again, and repeated the incantation. The image shuddered for a moment, then remained steady, but it was still blurred and unclear. Squinting, he leaned forward, trying to pick up some detail from the image. Around the edges, he could just make out the shape of trees, but that was of little help, as nearly the entire realm was forested. What he expected to see was the princess, who was with her, and hopefully where she was. Within the blurred image, Calibex could tell that it was raining, wherever those he sought might be, but rain should not have obscured the image at all, let alone to this extent. It was almost as if...

The wizard straightened, suddenly wary, his eyes narrowing. "No," he whispered, "it is not possible." He could think of only one reason he was unable to see Isabelle and her companions within the scrying fluid, and that would be if one of them carried a talisman to block his magic. But, that was impossible. There was not another wizard in the entire Westerlands who was as powerful as Calibex--at least not since Zoran had died, nearly five years ago. And yet, he thought, somehow one of them indeed carries a powerful, warding talisman.

Realizing that his efforts at finding the princess using this method were now futile, Calibex waved a hand over the image, causing it to disappear, and covered the scrying bowl. He began to pace back and forth within his chambers, one hand behind his back, the other cupped around his pointed chin. Mayhap he could trace the magic given off by their talisman, and track them that way.

He stopped his pacing and shook his head. No, that would not work, because if such a powerful talisman gave off any energy at all, he would have sensed the emanations long before Isabelle had made good her escape. Calibex moved over and slumped down in a high back chair before the cold hearth. Absently, he pointed a thin finger at several logs stacked within the fireplace, and they burst into flame.
