Cancer is a Four Letter Word
By: Peggy Gerber

I don't want to write about cancer,
I'd rather write about anything else,
like the miraculous new life growing
and blossoming inside my daughter's belly,
her tiny little hands and feet kicking and
pummeling my sleep deprived daughter as I
impatiently wait for my beloved to be born.

I don't want to write about cancer,
but all I can think about is the walnut
sized growth, crusty and decrepit
poisoning the body of the man
that I have loved for over forty years.
Or the surgery he will have to endure
as doctors cut through tendons and muscles
plucking out pieces of his insides
as I sit by helplessly and wait.

I don't want to write about cancer,
I'd rather write about our family and friends
coming together to pray that his broken, battered
body will soon heal and his strength will return,
and we can declare to all the world:
We won this battle!

I don't want to write about cancer,
but rather about all the plans my husband
and I will make when he is recovered.
