Based on an actual incident
He arrived for his appointment five minutes early, just as he always did. The receptionist looked up from her desk behind a pair of sliding glass windows and waved at him. He smiled and waved back, then sat down in the waiting room, absently tapping his foot in time to music coming from a small radio, located on a high shelf to keep anyone from changing the channel.
A few minutes later, Doctor Andrews appeared at the hallway entrance. "Hello, Rick. Come on back," he said, and disappeared down the corridor. Rick followed him into a small office and closed the door, then sat down in a chair that faced the doctor's desk.
After Dr. Andrew's glanced at Rick's file for a moment, he looked up and smiled. "So, Rick, how are you feeling?"
"All right, I guess."
"Good. I understand that you have returned to work, yes?"
"Uh, yeah. I've stated working again."
"Good, good. Any problems to report?"
Rick frowned, slightly. "What do you mean?"
"Well, in our previous sessions, you mentioned some things had been bothering you."
"Oh, right," he said, and nodded his head. "No, nothing's bothering me."
"Really?" the doctor asked, not sounding very convinced.
Rick frowned, again. "I don't know. Like what?"
Dr. Andrews tapped the file in front of him and said, "The hospital report states that you told them you had been hearing voices in the past. Are you still hearing any voices?"
"Uh, no. Not right now."
He smiled at Rick's obvious attempt to skirt the question. "What about lately? Have those voices been bothering you at all?"
He thought about it for a moment, then asked, "What do you mean by 'bothering' me?"
Dr. Andrews chuckled. "All right, let me rephrase the question. Have you been hearing any voices lately?"
Rick didn't answer the question right away, but finally said, "What if I am?"
"Well, I would like to know about that. For instance, can you describe the voices you hear?"
He shrugged his shoulders. "They sound like regular voices, I guess; just kind of quiet-like. You know--soft, almost whispers."
